Smallville: Abyss

What a surprise! Smallville Season 8 is turning out pretty good episodes. Even without Lex, and I do miss him on the show. Who knew losing Lex and Lana would open the imagination of the writers, finally, achieving the goal of turning Smallville!Clark into Superman!Clark.

While Heroes on Monday night played the revisionist card, Smallville hit the reset button. I am enjoying Smallville so much better than Heroes. Who knew.

Chloe’s mind is slowly being taken over by Brainiac, who is eradicating Chloe’s memories, one friend at a time. To Jimmy’s horror, he who already suffers many insecurities about his relationship with Chloe, discovers she doesn’t remember him, doesn’t remember they are to be married the following week. At least he understands, this lost isn’t focused on just Jimmy. Chloe doesn’t remember her best friend, Lana, either.

It seems each time Chloe reflects on the past involving friends, those memories are sucked out of her brains in vivid splashes of color. Jimmy and Chloe are dancing at their engagement party at Talon. Pieces of Talon begin disappearing, leaving Jimmy in her arms with no face. When Chloe turns to Jimmy, His facial features are all blank.

Brainiac is slick and sly. One memory he doesn’t try to destroy is Davis. Davis we know will become Doomsday. He is evil incarnate, who has fallen in love with Chloe, who will ultimately be the destruction of Superman, IIRC. In fact, through dreamscape, Brainiac forces Chloe to rely on Davis for help, making Davis some type of savior. Why? I don’t know yet but I think it’s pretty clear the writers could develop this thread for future episodes.

Of course, Clark comes to Chloe’s rescue. He seeks the help of the Fortress of Solitude and of his father, Jor-El. While in discussion, Jor-El realizes Clark has matured, and is ready to take on the mantle of what he will become, Superman. Jor-El helps Chloe. And this is where the reset button is employed. Clark asks his father to take away Chloe’s knowledge of Clark’s gifts. Clark thinks this will protect Chloe. I think Clark doesn’t understand just how this friendship works with Chloe. Knowing or not, Chloe, I feel will always be there for Clark.

Note: Chloe and Davis – sorry Jimmy. These two definitely have chemistry.
