Just who created the Centurions and the Cylons? I was listening to RDM No Exit podcast and it got me to thinking.
The order of creation interpreted from the quote by RDM during his No Exit podcast.
- Kobol – Man creates humanoid cylons. Centurions are created later and consequently become one of the catalysts for departing Kobol. It’s unclear whether it was man or cylon who created the Centurions first. My interpretation of the quote by RDM suggests it was the 13th Tribe who developed the Centurions. But I could be wrong.
- 12 Colonies – Man creates modernized Centurions. F5, descendents of the 13th Tribe built the eight-model humanoid cylons for the Centurions.
Repeating what we already know: The Centurions start the war with 12 Colonies. F5 arrives and agrees to build humanoid cylons for the Centurions if they discontinue the war with the humans. Forty years later these same humanoids annihilated the 12 colonies, lead by number one, John Cavil.
As suggested by Anders’ comments in No Exit, their homeland, Earth, was destroyed by their Centurions. After resurrecting and traveling in space for thousands of years, they reached the 12 Colonies with intention of warning them to treat their Centurions with care. Note how he does not mention humanoid cylons. It could be a simple omission or it may imply the 13th Tribe believed the 12 Colonies did not have the cylon-humanoid technology.
The vicious cycle between man and machine continues resulting with five survivors of the 13th Tribe, and about 39,000 humans of the 12 Colonies. The universe now consists of primarily of Cylons of the new generation.
John Cavil is the Colonials fiercest enemy but I think Adama and fleet have another problem. The crux of these wars have always started with the Centurions and their rebellion against their masters, be it human or cylon. Fortified by their belief in the one true god. A religious foundation passed on to the seven-model cylons.
If Adama boards the basestar as his base of operations, what will be the reactions of the Centurions aboard? Is their self-awareness still constrained by the inhibitors or did Natalie remove them when they rebelled against Cavil. Adama maybe risking his fleet AND the rebel cylons to danger right there on their doorstep.
The flip side to this, the Centurions could turn on John Cavil, thus, end the cycle of violence between man and machine.
This is a partial conversation between Ellen and Boomer while on the Basestar in No Exit. It was cut from the scene but I believe it will become available on the upcoming DVD.
The Lords of Kobol felt that man could never break the fourth wall, could never look upon the gods with understanding and grasped the divine nature of life. They believe this until one day man stole their fire and created the 1st cylon, the 1st artificial life, and then man in his arrogance believed that Cylon could never break the fourth wall. Man believed right up to the first moment the first Centurion was built and than the great exodus from paradise began.
