Movie Review: The Last Airbender

I have no thoughts on how well this adaptation held up against the original source material.  I’ve never seen the original show.  My opinions are strictly based on the movie ability to entertain.

Aang – I thought he was a cute kid and performed martial arts moves rather well.  But I have no clue to his story line except he’d refused the destiny of the avatar due to grieving.  Grieving what is what I want to know.  Maybe I missed something in viewing the movie.

Katara – I gather enough info after watching the movie this person should’ve been Asian.  The actress lacks chemistry and acting skills.  Her presentation of martial arts terrible.  There was simply no chemistry between Katara and Aang.

Sokka – no comment.  His part is of no consequence.  Maybe a couple of smiles.

Prince Zuko – I enjoyed the actor’s performance.  It was strong and the emotion resonance with his purpose in the movie.

The movie lacked incoherence for viewers unfamiliar with the original source material.  I wanted, needed more information about Aang to perceive the suffering of Aang, why he refused his destiny as the Avatar.  As much as I enjoy special affects, martial arts, and beautiful imagery, I must know the storyline.  Making a movie banking on the viewers to know the details is a terrible device and a waste of  my $12.00.  Ending a movie in an obvious sequel mode will not endear me or motivate me to spend additional monies.  A story should be told in its fullest.  Writing talent allows the original storytelling and setting up the next installment in either an exciting cliffhanger or exciting details encouraging the need to say, I can’t wait for the sequel, which did not happen here.
